San Juanico Straight



  • San Juanico Strait is a narrow strait in the Philippines. It splits the islands of Samar and Leyte. At its smallest point, the strait is only 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) wide, said to be the narrowest strait in the world. It is passed over by the San Juanico Bridge. The HVDC Leyte – Luzon powerline intersects San Juanico Strait as overhead line at 11°23′36″N 124°59′04″E/11.39333°N 124.98444°E/ 11.39333; 124.98444 w/ a tower on an ininhibitated island in the strait.



  • The longest bridge, San Juanico Strait, connects Tacloban to the third largest island of the Philippines, Samar. The 2.1 kilometer bridge is one of the primary tourist spots in the city. Other destinations include the Palo Cathedral, Imelda Marcos’s Versailles-inspired palatial mansion, the MacArthur National Park, World War II sites and memorials, and several black sand beaches around the city and nearby vicinities.
